Is Tea REALLY Healthy?

Is tea healthy?

For many centuries now, tea has been consumed as a warming and delicious beverage - but is it good for our health?

Studies would suggest that alongside tea being one of the world’s most popular drinks, it could also be one of the healthiest as well! So what is it that makes tea good for us?

What makes tea healthy?

The key component of tea that makes it so healthy is a chemical called polyphenols, and two in particular called catechins (provide antioxidants to plants) and epicatechins (also provide antioxidants to plants) These are found in teas, and in particular green tea. This is because of the process of fermentation in the making of green tea, which boosts the levels of polyphenols. However, black and red teas do have some as well.

Why are polyphenols good for us?

The key thing that makes polyphenols so good for us is their source of antioxidants, which are known for neutralizing oxidants made by the cells in our bodies. According to Harvard Health, too many oxidants can contribute to cardiovascular disease as well as certain kinds of cancers, so drinking tea can have health benefits in this way!

In terms of the downsides of drinking tea, the good news is that there does not seem to be any evidence of adverse effects on health - it is very complementary to a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps the only thing to be wary of is drinking too much-caffeinated tea, as this can give you a case of the jitters!
